In April, American astronaut Reid Wiseman served as the Commander for NASA's [Artemis II mission](https://proximareport.com/artemis-ii-launched/), flying [around the Moon](https://proximareport.com/artemis-ii-moon-distance/) [for ten days](https://proximareport.com/artemis-earth-historic-lunar/) to demonstrate that the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket are safe to launch humans, ahead of [later missions](https://proximareport.com/nasa-reorganizes-artemis-rocket/) to return to the surface.

In the months since the mission, Wiseman has transitioned from his role as an active astronaut to '[NASA Emeritus](https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-names-two-artemis-ii-astronauts-to-emeritus-program/?ref=proximareport.com)', as of September. That is a position where he can provide critical insights to the U.S. space agency, such as supporting the training of other astronauts, while being allowed to pursue other opportunities outside of government.

A month on from that, a surprise [announcement on October 21st](https://www.mercedesamgf1.com/news/former-astronaut-reid-wiseman-joins-mercedes-f1-team?ref=proximareport.com) stated that Wiseman has joined the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team in an ambassadorial role for the nine-time Drivers and eight-time Constructors world champions. As an ambassador for the team, Wiseman will be a figurehead for Mercedes' partners, sponsors, and guests to meet at team events and during Grand Prix weekends, according to the F1 team.

In other words, he is in a public relations role, something which had to be done before and after the Artemis II mission for many months to ramp up public interest in the lunar flight. Wiseman's first time in that role [will be at the upcoming](https://x.com/MercedesAMGF1/status/2112929772338905322?s=20&ref=proximareport.com) United States Grand Prix this weekend in Austin, Texas.

Speaking on the decision to hire Wiseman as a Team Ambassador, Mercedes' Chief Commercial Officer, Richard Sanders, shared via a press release:

> "Over the past few years, Reid has become a genuine friend of our team. Every conversation leaves you inspired, not just because of where he has been, but because of how he thinks and leads. There are remarkable similarities between F1 and human spaceflight."

In the press release, Wiseman would add the following:

> "I've always been struck by how much Formula One and space exploration have in common. In both worlds, success is never about one individual. It is built by talented teams solving difficult problems, preparing relentlessly, and trusting one another when the pressure is at its highest. I've been fortunate to spend time with the Mercedes F1 Team in recent seasons and have seen first-hand the culture, innovation, and determination that drives its success."

Ahead of the announcement, Wiseman [visited the team](https://lnkd.in/p/eEFKh-6v?ref=proximareport.com) as a VIP guest during the 2026 Miami Grand Prix weekend at the start of May, talking with [key](https://x.com/MercedesAMGF1/status/2053790218122043654?s=20&ref=proximareport.com) [personnel](https://x.com/MercedesAMGF1/status/2050665443703042511?s=20&ref=proximareport.com) and the team's [leading driver](https://x.com/MercedesAMGF1/status/2050759406929784883?s=20&ref=proximareport.com). That weekend was a good one to be a guest of the team, as Mercedes [went on to win](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/antonelli-overjoyed-with-record-breaking-miami-win-but-knows-the-road-is-still-long-in-2026-title-race.1Bn4oOCY3QYSgHalec3riz?ref=proximareport.com), allowing them to extend their advantages in both of F1's championships.

Since then, Mercedes has run away with both the Drivers and [Constructors championships](https://www.formula1.com/en/results/2026/team?ref=proximareport.com), but are yet to mathematically wrap them up. In the former, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has a comfortable 102-point lead and could clinch [his first world title this weekend](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/points-permutations-when-is-the-earliest-antonelli-could-win-the-world-championship.24UKT2fsQl4GmC5DMrmYUy?ref=proximareport.com). If he does, Antonelli would be Mercedes' newest champion, after Lewis Hamilton [claimed his seventh in 2020](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/seventh-title-beyond-wildest-dreams-admits-hamilton-who-says-keeping.5IhtoOVVVFOi4LJKvWZ1z7?ref=proximareport.com), while being F1's youngest ever at just twenty years old.

### And where are the other Artemis II astronauts?

Reid Wiseman is not the only member of the Artemis II crew to leave active astronaut duty since returning to Earth, as all four have at present. Victor Glover, the mission's pilot, became a 'NASA Emeritus' the same month as Wiseman to [return to his alma mater](https://ucm.calpoly.edu/news/victor-glover-returns-full-time-cal-poly?ref=proximareport.com), Cal Poly, for a full-time administrative leadership position. At the university, Glover is expected to support efforts to bolster California's academic leadership in many innovative sectors.

Christina Koch, one of the Mission Specialists, is remaining at NASA in an engineering-focused position. On October 13th, [it was announced that](https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-names-astronaut-christina-koch-acting-deputy-chief-engineer/?ref=proximareport.com) Koch will become Acting Deputy Chief Engineer of the space agency, overseeing technical milestones and mission engineering across several programs. It was not stated how long Koch will stay in the acting role, but NASA says she has moved to management astronaut status.

Meanwhile, Canadian Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen retired from his position as an astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency [back in July](https://www.canada.ca/en/space-agency/news/2026/07/canada-recognizes-the-career-and-achievements-of-canadian-space-agency-astronaut-jeremy-hansen.html?ref=proximareport.com). Hansen is yet to appear in a public role elsewhere, but he [said that he will still support](https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/jeremy-hansen-retiring-9.7260110?ref=proximareport.com) Canada on Earth and in space. Before retirement he had waited seventeen years to fly following selection in 2009.
